Together, dir. Michael Shanks

Released 2025. Watched March 5th, 2026.

I am and perhaps always will be a sucker for marriage-based horror stories. "Together" is not subtle with its metaphor --- it is a movie about getting married and about how marriage merges a couple's goals, hopes, dreams, schedules, routines, everything into one cohesive unit, and about how deeply horrifying that is as a concept. Where the movie really succeeds is by giving us two main characters who are absolutely the kind of people to get themselves into this situation: an unlikeable but completely believeable mid-thirties white couple. This choice adds a texture to the movie that would be lost if they really were a happy couple, or if only one of them was the problem. Marriage, or merge-age, is not undertaken out of a sense of love or devotion: there is no other option. It is pure obligation. Be happy with this or die. Also, the movie's choice to blend its horror with humor works quite well. It is gross and weird and uncomfortable and exactly what I wanted it to be.
