What if there was something wrong with you that you could not change, only hide? What if having that thing wrong with you changed the way you were raised in such a fashion that you never grew up to be quite like everyone else? What if you were weird? What if the people who claimed to like weird, to like you, were lying, or exaggerating? And, most importantly, what if you did something about it?
For the outcasts of the world, none of these questions are unfamiliar. And, really, I wonder how much the assumed "normies" of the world feel seen and heard and understood and really truly loved for who they really truly are. But of course, most of us don't commit murder about it. Only May. And, primarily by virtue of Angela Bettis's excellent performance, it is so, so, so easy to see how she was driven to it. My heart ached so fiercely for May. I wanted so badly for her to be happy. But her murder spree is not triumphant. Her constructed friend cannot see her. Even the tender corpse caress we end on is intensely bittersweet. It's not so simple, not for her, not for you, not for me, not for any of us.
