Gunk Baby by Jamie Marina Lau

Published 2021. Finished February 26th, 2026.

I love Lau's prose so much. So, so much. She does something I'm extremely fond of, where we have very little insight into what emotions our main character is feeling. We know what she's doing, and sometimes what she's thinking, but very rarely are we told what she's feeling, and if we are, we aren't ever really told why. I love this. How delicious! I also quite like Lau's use of sentence fragments. I love the prose so much that the plot could have been sort of whatever and I probably still would have enjoyed reading this, but it wasn't whatever. It was grounded and grim and weird, all adjectives I like quite a lot. Certainly worth the price my mother paid when she bought it from the sale section of a bookstore for me.
